UN Concerned About Crime, Child Migration Issues in Honduras

UN Secretary General expressed his concern about the issues of crime and child migration in Honduras.

UNITED NATIONS, January 15 (Sputnik) — UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon met with Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez and expressed his concern about the issues of crime and child migration in the country.

"The UN has been following with great concern the situation of citizen security in Honduras and its neighbours, and impact of drug-trafficking and organized crime,” the secretary general stated Wednesday.

Ban also expressed his satisfaction with the fact that "the homicide rate has dropped significantly during the last two years from 86 homicidal deaths out of 100,000, to 66."

The secretary general added that "22 percent, it is quite a significant improvement and I highly commend the President and its strong leadership and commitment to protect human dignity and human rights, and particularly saving human lives.”

Turning to the issue of children fleeing the country, Ban said that he is concerned by the issue of unaccompanied child migrants from Central America, adding that "dignity and human rights must be protected.”

Ban Ki-moon also welcomed the opening of a local office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in Honduras.
