Geopolitical threat, stemming from violations of the international law by some countries, undermines global stability, Russian Foreign Minister said.

Moscow, December 25 (Sputnik) – Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has stressed that the geopolitical threat, stemming from violations of the international law by some countries, undermines global stability.

"Apart from the physical threats [Ebola, Islamic State], which put human lives in jeopardy, there is a geopolitical threat, associated with a very neglectful attitude towards international law, attempts to act not in accordance with the principles of collective security stipulated by the UN Charter, but by means of imposing a unilateral view on everyone else," Lavrov said in an interview with Russia's Kommersant newspaper published Thursday.

Lavrov: Russia to Respond to Int'l Commitments Violation With Legal Action

According to Lavrov, attempts by "the historic West" led by the United States, to preserve the dominating positions in the world is "a serious threat" to global stability.

"These positions are no longer based on objective reality and completely ignore the existence of new, growing centers of economic development and the financial impact. Alongside with this comes the political influence, which should be enshrined in the agreement on how to continue doing business in today's diverse and multi-polar world," the Russian foreign minister stressed.

Earlier in October, Lavrov said that international stability had been seriously undermined by the Ukrainian crisis. Among other global threats the Russian foreign minister named Islamic State (IS) extremism in Syria and Iraq, the Israel-Palestinian conflict, Afghan instability and conflicts in Africa.

The United States has accused Moscow of meddling in Ukraine's internal affairs and has introduced several rounds of sanctions targeting Russia's banking, energy and defense sectors. Other Western countries, including EU member-states, have followed the US lead.

Russia has repeatedly denied its involvement in the situation in Ukraine and has responded to Western sanctions by implementing a one-year ban on certain food imports from the countries that had imposed restrictive measures on it.

Lavrov has stressed that a joint international effort is needed to counter the existing global threats and that Russia is ready to contribute to the process of solving these cross-border issues.
