VIENNA, November 22 (Sputnik) — German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said Saturday that reaching a permanent deal on Iranian nuclear program remains an open question.

"Iran should admit that there is no way of return to nuclear armament [of the country]. This is the goal and the criteria for the result of the talks," Steinmeier said upon arrival at nuclear talks with Iran at Palais Coburg, Vienna.

"It remains an open question whether the result will be achieved or not," he added.

"We have to wait and see how the talks go in the coming days," he said, adding that the world has been waiting for over 10 years for a solution.

The West is accusing Iran of developing nuclear weapons, while Tehran has repeatedly denied these claims stressing the peaceful character of its nuclear program aimed at meeting the country's growing energy needs.

During talks in Geneva in November 2013, the P5+1 group agreed to reach a long-term comprehensive agreement with Tehran by July 2014, guaranteeing the peaceful nature of the Iranian nuclear program. The deadline for the final deal was later extended to November 24.

The final round of talks on the Iranian nuclear program between Tehran and the P5+1 group of international negotiators, which comprises Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, China and Germany, began in Vienna Tuesday.
