UNITED NATIONS, November 20 (Sputnik) — Four days before the deadline in the nuclear talks on Iran, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Thursday urged all participants to show flexibility to conclude negotiations.
"On the occasion of the resumption of talks between the P5+1 and the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Secretary-General calls on all participants to demonstrate the necessary flexibility, wisdom and determination to bring the negotiations to a successful conclusion that meets the concerns and interests of all sides," the UN statement said.
According to the document, the UN chief "hopes that reaching a mutually-acceptable and comprehensive agreement will restore confidence in the peaceful nature of Iran's nuclear program".
Ban said he was "convinced" that a permanent accord would help strengthen regional and global peace and security "at a time when global cooperation is needed perhaps more than ever".
The final round of Tehran's talks with the group of six world powers – Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, China, and Germany – kicked off in Vienna on Tuesday. November 24 is the deadline for a final deal that could see the international community lift sanctions against Iran.
The West and Israel have accused Iran of attempting to build a nuclear weapon under the guise of a civilian atomic program, while Tehran argues that its nuclear development is aimed purely at meeting the country's growing energy needs and achieving other peaceful goals.
