Three leading Hong Kong student protesters plan to visit Beijing to meet with governmental officials to present their political demands.

MOSCOW, November 14 (Sputnik) — Leaders of the Hong Kong Federation of Students (HKFS) are planning to visit Beijing on Saturday to seek meetings with Chinese officials amid ongoing protests against the changing of the electoral law in the Chinese special administrative region.

According to HKFS, three of its leaders, including the union's head Alex Chow, are going to fly to the Chinese capital to try to meet with governmental officials to present their political demands.

Their trip comes despite Hong Kong student group Scholarism being turned away at the Chinese border city of Shenzhen last week. According to Chinese media reports, the officials of both Hong Kong and China expect that the HKFS trip to Beijing will end in failure.

The protests began on September 26 when authorities in Beijing sought to change the procedure for the election of the Hong Kong chief executive. The protesters are against the changes that would require candidates for the 2017 election to be approved by a nominating committee appointed by the mainland government.
