Four judges have been elected to the International Court of Justice, including Kirill Gevorgian of the Russian Federation, with voting set to continue Friday, for the final, fifth, judge to be selected.

UNITED NATIONS, November 7 (RIA Novosti) — The voting took place simultaneously in the UN Security Council, where nine of the possible 15 votes were required for election, and in the UN General Assembly, where 97 votes were required.

Gevorgian gathered all 15 possible votes in the Security Council's final round of the day on Thursday. Mohamed Bennouna of Morocco and Joan E. Donoghue of the United States both had 14 votes, while James Richard Crawford of Australia got 12 votes.

In the Security Council, Argentina's Susana Ruiz Cerutti got nine votes in Thursday's final round, and Jamaica's Patrick Lipton Robinson was under the threshold of nine, with a total of seven votes.

But in the General Assembly, Robinson got 141 votes in Thursday's final round while Cerutti received only 108. Since both had over the threshold of 97 votes, the contest was not decided and is set to continue Friday.

The International Court of Justice is the primary judicial branch of the United Nations. Russian representatives have always served as judges in the court since its establishment in 1945. Gevorgian will be the ninth Russian judge to serve in the International Court of Justice.
