Russia and China both want a political resolution to the Syrian civil war without “foreign interference,” Russia’s Foreign Ministry said Friday.

MOSCOW, September 6 (RIA Novosti) – Russia and China both want a political resolution to the Syrian civil war without “foreign interference,” Russia’s Foreign Ministry said Friday.

The ministry issued that statement following a meeting between the Russian and Chinese foreign ministers on the sidelines of the G20 summit near St. Petersburg.

“The positions of Russia and China, which call for a political settlement of the Syrian conflict without foreign interference, coincide,” the statement said.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, “exchanged opinions on urgent international and regional problems,” the ministry said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, also met on Friday on the summit’s sidelines.

The US Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted Wednesday to give President Barack Obama the authority to use military force against the government of Syrian President Bashar Assad in response to an alleged chemical weapons attack last month.

Russia has urged all sides in the civil war to use diplomatic means to end it.
