Alexander Gustave Eiffel, a world-renowned French civil engineer and architect, died on December 28, 1923. He designed several landmark constructions, including the Porto viaduct in Portugal, Pest railway station in Hungary, and the internal structure of the Statue of Liberty. Alexandre Gustave Eiffel was born in Dijon, France in 1832. A graduate of the École Centrale des Arts et Manufactures, he specialized in metal construction and began his engineering career with the French railway network, making his name with various bridges for the company. After his retirement from the Compagnie des Etablissements Eiffel, he focused on research in meteorology and aerodynamics. Eiffel’s interest in these areas came from the problems he encountered with the effects of wind forces on the structures he had built. He made important contributions to the both disciplines.
