Commentator Alexei Sharshkov, vice president of the Federation of Sport Pig Breeders, told journalists that the previous pig race in Russian history was held in 1898 on Moscow’s Trubnaya Square where the Flower Market was located.
Sharshkov noted that in the late 1890s, the winner was slaughtered and subsequently eaten by members of the Russian Royal Family. Not a single pig will be eaten this time, he stressed. The pigs will eventually be used as breeders.
