Fidel’s parents were uneducated, but they were trying to give a good education to their children. Fidel graduated from the Havana University’s Department of Law and received a doctorate degree. In the early 1950s, he joined the Cuban People's Party and was nominated as its candidate to the National Congress in 1952, but the elections did not take place because of a coup d’etat in March that year led by General Fulgencio Batista.

August 13 marks the 85th anniversary since Fidel Castro’s birth. The future leader of the Cuban Revolution was born in the village of Biran in the eastern Cuban Oriente Province. His father Angel Castro was a Spanish immigrant who owned a large sugarcane plantation in Cuba, and his mother, Lina Ruz Gonzalez, was his servant.
