This emerald brooch of Empress Catherine II of Russia, which Christie’s calls “one of the outstanding jewels in the world,” was auctioned off for $1,650,500. The brooch was passed down through three generations of the Romanov royal dynasty. It was given as a wedding present to Maria Feodorovna (née Sophie Dorothea of Württemberg), the second wife of Emperor Paul I, and was inherited by the House of Hohenzollern following her death.
