ST. PETERSBURG, April 12. (RIA Novosti) - On Tuesday St. Petersburg will hold commemorative events related to the wreck of the K8 nuclear submarine, which happened 32 years ago.

At noon the Nikolo-Bogoyavlensky naval cathedral will hold a service devoted to the "soldiers who died at sea", where all the crewmembers will be mentioned by name, the St. Petersburg submariners' club reported.

Afterwards the survivors of the K8 and widows of the dead will gather in the club's mess. In compliance with the decision of the club's council five widows will be awarded commemorative badges "Sailor's Wife" with the inscription "For your Faith, Hope and Love".

The K8 nuclear submarine sank on April 12, 1970 in the Atlantic ocean after a big fire that made it lose its reserve buoyancy and longitudinal stability. The wreck killed 52 crewmembers.

"It was the first loss of the Soviet Navy's nuclear submarines," the club's representative pointed out.

The town of Ostrovnoi, the Murmansk region, from where the submarine left for military service, has built a monument to the K8, with the names of all the perished crewmembers carved on it. Every year on April 12 mourning events take place at the monument.

Two streets in Ostrovnoi are named after the submarine's commanding officer Vsevolod Bessonov and doctor Alexei Solovei.
