Tennessee Woman Awakens From Coma, Learns She’s Had Baby

Doctors feared the four-month coma would be permanent, but the 20-year-old woman regained consciousness to the news that she’d delivered a baby boy.

Sharista Giles, a college student who was four months pregnant, went into a coma in December after a car crash. Her aunt Beverly Giles told ABC News that her niece suffered severe head trauma after a friend of fell asleep behind the wheel and slammed into a concrete barrier. Doctors believed she had only a 10% chance of recovery. 

A month later doctors were forced to deliver her baby, resulting in the birth of 14-ounce child the family calls Baby L.

“The doctors were telling us there was nothing else they could do,” Beverly said. “They already gave up hope. We never gave up. She’s fought this hard.”

On Wednesday, for the first time since the accident, Sharista opened her eyes to see a photo of her son, who now weighs little more than six pounds. 

"Sharista has her eyes open n blinking n squeezing our fingers when we ask her to. Praise the Lord! She was following her daddy's voice n we showed her a picture of Baby L n she seen him!!!" Beverly wrote on Facebook.
