Hundreds of flights were suspended at Nepal's Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu after a “Turkish Airlines” flight from Istanbul crash landed breaking its front undercarriage Wednesday. The plane has been blocking the runway since the incident, resulting in 12,000 people unable to leave the country.
No one died during the landing, but four out of the approximately 230 passengers on board were injured. All of them were reported to have been properly evacuated and received the necessary medical attention. The aircraft, however, is completely immobilized resulting in airport authorities requesting assistance from Indian specialists who arrived Thursday.
Once the situation returns to normal the airport will work around the clock for three days to eliminate the backlog of flights, Nepalese officials stated.
The runways of Nepalese airports are considered to be among the most challenging in the world for pilots as they are often located close to mountains.
