A forest ranger in central Russia has confessed to killing a hunter because he thought the man had shot his dog, the Interior Ministry said on Monday.

KIROV, July 15 (RIA Novosti) - A forest ranger in central Russia has confessed to killing a hunter because he thought the man had shot his dog, the Interior Ministry said on Monday.

The ranger, 52, called the police at Omutninsk in the Kirov Region on Saturday to say he had killed a man he knew, a professional hunter, who he suspected of killing his dog that had gone missing, the ministry said in a statement.

The ranger fired several rifle shots at the hunter who later died of his wounds, and also shot dead the hunter's dog.

A criminal case has been opened on charges of homicide, the ministry said.
