The US military awarded federal prison labor corporation UNICOR a contract worth more than $12 million to produce fitness clothing for Army personnel, the Pentagon said in a press release.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Work will be performed in DC, Virginia, Florida and Arizona and is expected to be completed by October 2018, as part of a contract modification that brings the maximum dollar value of the package to $24,390,000.

"UNICOR/Federal Prison Industries, Washington, District of Columbia, has been awarded a maximum $12,315,000… [contract] for physical fitness uniforms," the release stated on Thursday.

Human rights groups have complained that US government prison labor corporations like UNICOR are not subject to federal health and safety regulations despite evidence of poor working conditions.

In 2015, according to its annual report, UNICOR posted $558.5 million in revenue with most sales deriving from the production of clothing, textiles, electronics and office furniture.
