BAE Systems Southeast Shipyards and General Dynamics NASSCO have won contracts worth almost one billion dollars to provide maintenance and sustainment for the US Navy’s Littoral Combat Ships (LCS), the US Department of Defense said in a press release.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The contracts both contain five ordering periods which have a cumulative ceiling value of $741.4 million and $209.3 million for a combined value of $950.7 million, the release noted.

“BAE Systems Southeast Shipyards Mayport LLC, Jacksonville, Florida and General Dynamics NASSCO, Mayport, Florida are each being awarded… multiple award contracts (MAC) to support sustainment execution efforts for Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) 1 variant class ships,” the release stated on Monday.

Designed for close-shore combat, the littoral combat ship program has suffered from cost overruns, as well as embarrassing setbacks.

A government watchdog group found that the littoral combat ship USS Freedom showed cracks in the ship’s hull, while the USS Independence is allegedly susceptible to corrosion.
