he United Kingdom remains a strong NATO ally and its position within the alliance will not be changed by its decision to leave the European Union, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said Friday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Thursday, the United Kingdom held a referendum to determine whether or not the country should leave the European Union. According to the final results, 51.9 percent of voters, or 17.4 million people, decided to support Brexit, while about 16.1 million opposed it.

"The British people have decided to leave the European Union. As it defines the next chapter in its relationship with the EU, I know that the United Kingdom's position in NATO will remain unchanged," Stoltenberg said in a statement.

"The UK will remain a strong and committed NATO Ally, and will continue to play its leading role in our Alliance. Today, as we face more instability and uncertainty, NATO is more important than ever as a platform for cooperation among European Allies, and between Europe and North America," the statement reads.
