US Blocks About $16Mln in Terrorists’ Assets in 2015 - Treasury

The US authorities blocked almost $16 million in assets belonging to international terrorist organizations in 2015, the US Department of the Treasury said on Monday in an annual report to the US Congress.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — In 2014, the amount of the blocked funds stood at almost $22 million, according to the Treasury.

"As of December 31, 2015, assets blocked…totaled $37,634,156," the report stated.

The report showed that the authorities restrained 281,000 in funds belonging to al-Qaeda, and $11 of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad militant group.

In addition, the Treasury report included for the first time blocked funds of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and the Daesh, which stand at about $14 million and $131,000 accordingly.

The Daesh, outlawed in many countries including in Russia and the United States.

The terror group controls large areas in oil-rich Syria, Iraq and Libya, and has been relying heavily on revenues from black-market sales of drugs, smuggled crude oil and human trafficking.
