The Russian Navy has made a final decision to order the construction of six Varshavyanka-class (NATO reporting name Improved Kilo-class) diesel-electic powered submarines for the Pacific Fleet, Deputy Navy Commander-in-Chief Vice Adm. Alexander Fedotenkov said Tuesday.

ST-PETERSBURG (Sputnik) — Russia’s Admiralty Shipyards launches the last of the six same class submarines for the Black Sea Fleet on Tuesday.

"Your ships are launched on time with high quality valuable for the Navy, the Black Sea Fleet and others. The decision to build a series of submarines for the Pacific Fleet has been made," Fedotenkov said during the launch ceremony.

It remains unknown where the submarines will be stationed, the decision is yet to be made.

It has been reported earlier that the Russian authorities are making unprecedented efforts to improve military infrastructure and rearm units based in Russia's Far East with modern weaponry.

The Varshavyanka-class (Project 636.3) is an improved version of Kilo-class submarines that features advanced stealth technology, extended combat range and the ability to strike land, surface and underwater targets.

The vessels, carrying crews of 52, have a top underwater speed of 20 knots and a cruising range of 400 miles (electric propulsion), with the ability to patrol for 45 days. The submarines are armed with 18 torpedoes and eight surface-to-air missiles.

The submarines are mainly intended for anti-ship and anti-submarine missions in relatively shallow waters.
