LONDON (Sputnik) – UK Defence Secretary Michael Fallon called on NATO countries to spend at least two percent of their gross domestic product (GDP) on defense needs as the alliance requires.
"The 2 per cent target is vital for the security of all NATO countries. That’s why we’ve committed to it and why we want all members to do the same," Fallon said Thursday as quoted by the country’s Defence Ministry.
On Thursday, Fallon met with his Romanian counterpart Mihnea Motoc.
"Romania is a key NATO ally. I welcome its increase in defence spending and look forward to deepening our defence relationship," the UK minister said.
According to a NATO report, only five of its members out of 28, including the United Kingdom, met the goal of spending 2 percent of GDP on defense in 2015.
