Iran Purchased Russian S-300 to Boost National Security - Defense Minister

Iran has purchased Russian S-300 air defense systems to safeguard the country's national security, deliveries of these systems have been partially completed, Iranian Defense Minister Hossein Dehghan said Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Dehghan added that he did not discuss potential arms contracts at a meeting with Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu on the sidelines of the the Moscow International Security Conference as the meeting focused on Russia-Iran joint efforts to fight global terrorism.

"Iran bought S-300 to ensure the country's security in face of existing and potential threats. The delivery schedule envisions different timeframes. Some of the deliveries have been completed while the remaining part will be certainly supplied in the future," Dehghan said in an interview with RT television.

The minister also stressed that Tehran is not planning to buy advanced S-400 Triumf air defense systems from Russia.

S-300 (NATO reporting name SA-21 Growler) is a missile defense system designed to fire surface-to-air missiles at aerial targets such as helicopters, warplanes and cruise or ballistic missiles.
