The US Navy has met the objectives set in the 2016 Ice Exercise (ICEX), designed to assess the readiness of the submarine force to operate in the Arctic, US Navy Submarine Forces Commander Joseph Tofalo said in a press release on Friday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Two hundred participants from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Norway took part in the 2016 ICEX exercise, according to the release.

"The objectives of demonstrating presence, gaining additional Arctic operational experience, furthering partnerships and expanding scientific research were all achieved over the four weeks in which the ice camp was operational," Tofalo stated.

Arctic Submarine Laboratory Director Larry Estrada said the participants were able to carry out significant testing and research during the exercise.

"What we have learned, and the data collected by everyone, will only further our understanding of this region, and improve our operating capabilities in such an unpredictable environment," Estrada noted.

The Navy also pointed out that the attack submarines Hampton and Hartford will remain in the Arctic to continue under-ice operations until early April.
