WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — "Under the terms of the modification, Electric Boat will perform air conditioning unit detail design, prototype unit manufacture and technical manual development," the release, which was issued on Tuesday, stated.

Initially awarded in December 2012, the five-year $1.85 billion contract calls for Electric Boat to perform research and development work for the US Navy’s next-generation ballistic-missile submarine, due to begin construction in 2021 with a total potential value of $2.5 billion, the release noted.

The replacement submarine, formerly the SSBN-X Future Follow-on Submarine, is being designed to replace the current Ohio-class ballistic missile-carrying nuclear submarines.

The first submarine is scheduled to begin construction in 2021 and enter service in 2031.

Electric Boat is a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics.
