A Patriot PAC-3 missile successfully intercepted a target rocket as part of a US Army-led air defense test, Lockheed Martin said in a news release.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The PAC-3, the release noted, is a high-velocity intercept missile designed to destroy tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and aircraft.

“The PAC-3 interceptor successfully detected, tracked and intercepted a Patriot-as-a-Target (PAAT), which is a legacy Patriot missile modified to represent a tactical ballistic missile common in today’s operational environment,” the release stated on Tuesday.

The exercise was conducted on November 19 at the White Sands Missile Range in the US state of New Mexico, and is the second successful PAC-3 test in a week.

On November 12, another PAC-3 intercepted an airborne missile in the US Army Integrated Air and Missile Defense Battle Command System fight test also conducted at the White Sands range.
