Pakistan Proposes Demilitarization of Kashmir Region

Pakistan proposed to India the demilitarization of the Jammu and Kashmir disputed region and the withdrawal of troops from the Siachen Glacier, Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said at the UN General Assembly Wednesday.

NEW DELHI (Sputnik) — Jammu and Kashmir is a area claimed by both India and Pakistan following the end of British rule in 1947. Following several armed conflicts, the two states agreed to a ceasefire in 2003. Since then, both sides have repeatedly accused each other of violating the truce.

“It is necessary to take steps towards the demilitarization of Kashmir. It is necessary to come to an absolute agreement on the withdrawal of troops from the Siachen glacier area,” Sharif said.

At the moment, no official border exists between India and Pakistan, and the two countries are separated by a demarcation line.
