MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The Tu-160 (NATO reporting name Blackjack) bombers were escorted by MiG-31BM (Foxhound) fighter aircraft, which took off from an airfield near Russia's city of Perm.

"Each pair of fighters practiced one by one escorting of Tu-160s and enemy interception at long distances," the ministry said.

The Tu-160 bomber, nicknamed the White Swan for its surface color designed to reflect thermal radiation, has variable-sweep wings and is designed to engage targets around the globe with nuclear and conventional weapons.

"During the flight they received the necessary data on coordinates of the long-range bombers and then – on the enemy targets," the ministry continued.

The Center-2015 drills started on Monday. The exercises, aiming to contain the outbreak of an armed conflict in Central Asia, involve around 170 aircraft.

About 95,000 soldiers, over 7,000 pieces of military equipment and 20 warships are taking part in the command-staff exercises.
