MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Australia is expanding its airstrikes against ISIL militant group to Syria within the framework of the US-led international coalition, Prime Minister Tony Abbott said Wednesday.

"The government has also decided to extend Australia’s current air strikes against Daesh [ISIL] in Iraq to Daesh targets in Syria as well. There can be no stability and no end to the persecution and suffering in the Middle East until the Daesh death cult is degraded and ultimately destroyed. That’s what our armed forces are doing in Iraq and we need to do it in Syria too," Abbott said, as quoted by the Guardian newspaper.

ISIL militant group has taken over large parts of Syria and Iraq.

An international coalition led by the United States has been launching airstrikes against the militants in both countries, as well as supporting and training the so-called moderate opposition. The coalition did not receive approval from Damascus prior to launching its operations in Syria.

Last week, media reported that France was also considering expanding its airstrikes to Syria.
