The United Kingdom has allocated some 500 million pounds ($770 million) to fund the Royal Navy’s flagship submarine base at Scotland's Faslane, one of the three major naval hubs in Britain and home to its Trident nuclear submarines, UK Chancellor George Osborne said in a statement Monday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The money will be used for infrastructure projects expected to be launched in 2017 and completed over the next decade, securing the jobs of the base's 6,700 military and civilian staff, as well as creating many more, Osborne said, according to the BBC.

"Today's announcement of more than £500m demonstrates the UK government's commitment to investing in the infrastructure and capability to ensure that Faslane remains the centre of UK submarine operations for the next generation…. Across Scotland, around 12,600 people work in defence and my defence spending commitments will secure these jobs," Osborne was quoted as saying.

The announcement follows Osborne's July 8 budget announcement, in which he pledged to meet the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's (NATO) defense spending requirement of at least 2 percent of annual GDP.

Hiroshima Anniversary: Brits Rally to Scrap Trident Nuclear Program
The UK's Royal Navy currently operates four Trident submarines out of the Faslane base, the only facility in the United Kingdom capable of accommodating the country's nuclear deterrent.

The upgrading of the aging Trident system was a hotly-discussed topic in the run-up to the May 7 UK general elections, in which the Conservative Party, who pledged to renew the program, swept to victory.
