The United States will deploy three B-2s on a scheduled rotation amid rising tensions between Seoul and Pyongyang.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The United States will maintain a continuous US bomber presence in the West Pacific in light of tensions between North and South Korea, US Air Force Chief of Staff Mark Welsh told press on Monday.

"We are in the process right now of deploying three B-2s on a scheduled rotation," Gen. Welsh said when asked about the US response to rising tensions between Seoul and Pyongyang.

Welsh noted there has been "nothing additional" beyond the scheduled delivery of B-2s bombers and continued air force presence at the Anderson Air Base in the US territory of Guam.

Tensions flared up on the Korean Peninsula last week when North Korea fired shells at a South Korean military base across the demilitarized zone. Seoul responded with dozens of heavy artillery rounds.

On Monday, South Korea’s Defense Ministry announced that the United States and South Korea were discussing the timing of the US strategic military asset deployments on the Korean peninsula.
