US Department of Defense (DoD) does not possess the information about the casualties in blasts that hit a US military base in Kanagawa Prefecture near Tokyo in Sagamihara City, DoD spokesman Bill Urban said Sunday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — He said that base firefighters and first responders were fighting the resulting fire to prevent its spread to nearby buildings.

“An explosion occurred today just after midnight Japan time at a building on a US Army post, the Sagami Depot in the city of Sagamihara, Japan, about 25 miles southwest of Tokyo. There are no reports of injury,” Urban told RIA Novosti.

The Sagami Depot is used by the US Army for the logistics purposes and the deployment of a support battalion. The US armed forces were deployed in Japan after the end of the World War II to perform administrative functions on the occupied territory. After Japan restored its sovereignty, US Army remained its presence in the country to protect Tokyo under the Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security.
