The US-led coalition has launched 27 airstrikes against the Islamic State militant group’s positions in Iraq and Syria in recent days, destroying numerous tactical units, the Combined Joint Task Force said in a release.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to the coalition’s Saturday release, the airstrikes were carried out on Friday.

In Syria, the coalition destroyed several fighting positions, a bunker and two excavators.

In Iraq, the airstrikes destroyed vehicles, weapons, fighting positions and engineer equipment.

The Islamic State is an extremist group which has taken over large parts of Syria and Iraq last year.

Since 2014, an international coalition led by the United States has been carrying out airstrikes against the militants’ positions in both countries. However, Washington had not sought approval from Damascus prior to launching the campaign in Syria.
