First Iraqi-Piloted US F-16 Fighters Land in Iraq After Months of Delay

The first batch of US F-16 fighter jets piloted by Iraqis landed on Monday at Iraq’s Balad air base north of Baghdad, the Iraqi Defense Ministry said in an announcement on its website.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The announcement was confirmed on Twitter by US Ambassador Brett McGurk, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Iraq and Iran in the US Department of State’s Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs.

"After years of preparation & training in the U.S., Iraqi pilots today landed the 1st squadron of Iraqi F16s in Iraq," he tweeted.

The White House said Sunday there were 30 Iraqi Air Force pilots in the training pipeline.
