The United States does not have any intentions to send additional armed forces overseas, President Barack Obama said in a press conference at the Pentagon on Monday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Earlier on Monday, Obama visited the Pentagon to obtain an update from the national security team on the US efforts to fight the Islamic State, according to the White House.

“There are no current plans to do so,” Obama said in answering an Army reservist’s question about the plans of the US military command to send more troops overseas. “That is not something we currently discussed.”

A US-led Coalition of some 60 nations has been conducting airstrikes against the Islamic State in Iraq since August 2014 and in Syria since September 2015.

Obama underscored that degrading and destroying the Islamic State forces will be a long-term campaign.

More than 5100 airstrikes have been carried out against extremists’ targets, according to the White House.
