Over the past 20 years, the United States has been promoting NATO’s expansion in Eastern Europe, Quentin Jacquet wrote in the online French information site Boulevard Voltaire.

Washington lied when it promised Mikhail Gorbachev that the alliance won't urge members of the former Warsaw Pact to join its ranks, the author said.

Under the pretext of bringing democracy and Western values, the United States has interfered and toppled governments around the world, Jacquet claims. Just recently, another group of US "military advisors" travelled to Iraq in the name of democracy. Again.

Russia has always said it was unacceptable for Ukraine to be incorporated into NATO. There is nothing to be done to change Moscow's mind about this issue. At least, until NATO is widely perceived as the bridgehead of US policies and of intervention in Eastern Europe, Jacquet said.

Recent political events only prove this point, according to Jacquet. First, Washington organized the 2004 Orange Revolution in Ukraine. However, Russia managed to swing Ukraine back after Viktor Yanukovych was legitimately elected as the President.

Ten years later, Washington organized another revolution, with the help of right-wing Ukrainian nationalists.

This time, Jacquet writes, the United States carefully chose the moment to stage the coup. The timing was perfect, as in February 2014 Vladimir Putin was busy with the Sochi Olympic Games and couldn't do anything to prevent the illegal overthrow of Ukraine's president.

At the same time, since the fall of the Soviet Union, Russia has not done anything to destabilize international peace, according to Jacquet, who writes that all Putin wanted for his country was to make it richer and to integrate Russia into the international economic system.
