A large popular majority in the United Kingdom is opposed to the creation of a European Union unified army, believing that a sovereign state must have its own independent army, British UKIP Party spokesman for defense Mike Hookem told Sputnik.

One in Three EU Citizens Wants EU Army to Replace NATO Reliance
MOSCOW (Sputnik), Daria Chernyshova — President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker proposed in March to form an EU army in order to respond to threats posed to member states and neighboring allied countries.

Earlier on Tuesday, an ICM poll conducted exclusively for Sputnik, revealed that one in three citizens of France, Germany and the United Kingdom answering survey questions believe the European Union should have its own army, instead of relying on the US-led NATO bloc.

"A duty of a sovereign nation is to defend its own people and we have quite a good army in the Great Britain, probably the best in the world… We are surely against a European army," Hookem, who is also a member of the European Parliament, said.

"We are a part of NATO and we will play our full role in NATO," the UKIP spokesman said.
