WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The Islamist was identified as Ali Awni Harzi, a "known Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant operative and organizational intermediary."
"His death degrades ISIL's ability to integrate North African jihadists into the Syrian and Iraqi fight and removes a jihadist with long ties to international terrorism," Pentagon officials said in a statement.
Harzi is suspected of having operated closely with ISIL-associated extremists throughout North Africa and the Middle East.
The airstrike that killed Harzi took place on June 15, 2015 in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul.
On September 11, 2012, Islamic militants stormed the US diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya, killing Ambassador Stevens and three other US government employees, and injuring ten people.
