The recently signed cyber security pact between Russia and China is a cause for concern, former Chairman of the US House Intelligence Committee Mike Rogers told Sputnik on Tuesday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik), Leandra Bernstein — Former Chairman of the US House Intelligence Committee Mike Rogers said that the pact was “clearly designed to suppress dissidents” in both countries, to facilitate theft and to conduct aggressive actions in neighboring countries.

“The implications of this are really quite concerning,” Rogers said of the agreement signed by Russia and China on Friday agreeing to cooperate further in the cyber domain.

He questioned whether China and Russia would “get sucked in on the cyber front” to one another’s regional disputes.

“All those questions go unanswered,” he stated, but noted that the extent and purpose of Russian and Chinese cyber cooperation “is yet to be discovered.”

On Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese Premier Xi Jinping signed a bilateral cyber security agreement. The two countries pledged deeper cooperation in the cyber domain, including cyber-threat sharing and agreed not to launch cyberattacks against one another.

The cyber security pact was one of 32 bilateral agreements signed between the two heads of state during the 70th anniversary celebration of Victory Day in Moscow.
