Seoul could deploy a new guided rocket aimed against North Korean vessels as early as 2016, Yonhap reported Sunday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The rocket, which has been under development since 2012, is equipped with an uncooled infrared detector and can detect several targets simultaneously, according to the news outlet.

"We see this as a key weapon that strikes targets traveling on water at high speeds," an unnamed military official was quoted as saying by the news outlet.

The rocket is said to have an estimated range of up to 8 km (5 miles) and is reportedly specifically designed to attack North Korean air-cushioned landing craft.

North Korea is reported to have built a base for air-cushioned landing craft not far from its sea border with South Korea in 2012, and has recently increased drills using these vessels.

North and South Korea are still formally at war, as no peace treaty was ever signed after the Korean War of 1950-1953.
