Rouhani Assures Assad of Iran's Support for Syria in Combating Terrorism

Iran together with Russia and Turkey is a guarantor of the de-escalation zones in Syria, with the latest safe zone being established in the province of Idlib during the Astana talks on Syrian peace settlement.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Iran will "stay with people of Syria and the Syrian government in the fight against terrorism," Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Saturday during a phone conversation with his Syrian counterpart Bashar Assad, adding that Tehran was ready to take active part in the reconstruction of Syria.

Iranian and Syrian leaders held a phone conversation in the wake of the Wednesday meeting between presidents Vladimir Putin, Hassan Rouhani and Recep Tayyip Erdogan that was aimed at sealing the progress that has been made in the Syrian settlement process, and the steps necessary to ensure the normalization of the political and security situation in the country.

Rouhani characterized the trilateral summit in Sochi as a "good step at the right time", stressing that the decision to hold the National Dialogue Congress in Syria "in the current situation could be a good step for stability and security in Syria."

According to a statement released in the follow up to the meeting of the presidents of three ceasefire guarantors on Syria in Sochi, the countries' joint efforts since the establishment of the ceasefire regime in late December 2016 have helped secure a "breakthrough" in bringing closer the elimination of Daesh terrorist group.
