MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Thursday, the Syrian army said in a statement it had assumed full control over Aleppo, bringing back peace and security to the embattled city.

"UNHCR will be part of broader UN assistance programs in Aleppo and convoys as and when access is possible. UNHCR will also seek to further intervene in its responsibility areas, including expanding community centres, protection interventions, provision of core-relief items and shelter support," Saltmarsh said.

On Thursday, according to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the evacuation of people from Aleppo has been completed. Some 40,000 people, including militants, have left the city since evacuations began a week ago following consultations between Russia, Turkey and Iran.

On December 16, the Russian Defense Ministry's center for Syrian reconciliation said that the Syrian army operation to liberate Aleppo's eastern neighborhoods was over, and that Syrian government troops were eliminating separate hotbeds of militant resistance.

Syria has been in a state of civil war since 2011, with government forces fighting against numerous opposition and terrorist groups, such as the Jabhat Fatah al Sham and Daesh, both outlawed in Russia.
