At least seven people were killed in an attack on the American University in Kabul.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – At least seven people were killed and more than 30 others were wounded in an attack on the American University in Kabul, the Stars and Stripes newspaper reports.

The newspaper cited Simonetta Gola, a spokeswoman for the medical nonprofit Emergency, as saying on Wednesday that the organization’s Kabul facility had received 18 patients, including five women. Three of the injured are in very critical condition.

Some Wednesday media reports have suggested that up to a dozen people could have been killed in the attack and over 40 could be injured.

On Wednesday, gunmen attacked the American University in the capital of Afghanistan, reportedly detonating an explosive device and opening fire. The Stars and Stripes newspaper said citing a spokesman for Kabul garrison that a suicide bomber first blew himself up at the outer wall of the University, after which armed attackers broke in.

A police operation launched after the attack ended about 10 hours after its start. Two attackers were reportedly killed.

No group has claimed responsibility for the deadly act yet.
