UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) — In July, Israel announced a decision to issue tenders for construction of 770 housing units in the settlement of Gilo and 323 housing units more in East Jerusalem.

"During the course of just last week, Israeli authorities displaced 64 Palestinians, including 24 children, by demolishing 29 structures across eight locations. Since 1 August, Israeli security forces have destroyed or confiscated a total of 85 civilian structures across 28 West Bank communities, displacing 129 Palestinians and affecting the livelihoods of at least another 2,100," the statement said.

There had been an increase of demolitions across the West Bank with 786 Palestinian structures demolished in 2016, the activities had resulted in the displacement of about 1,200 people, the statement added.

According to the statement, international law required that Israel ensured that "the basic needs of Palestinians are met."

Palestinians seek to create a diplomatically recognized independent state on the territories of the West Bank, including East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip, according to the frontiers that were in existence before the 1967 Six-Day War with Israel. The international community did not recognize the annexation of East Jerusalem by Israel in 1967.

Israel has long been building settlements in the occupied lands of the West Bank despite opposition from the United Nations.
