In the Syrian city of al-Hasakah armed conflict between the Syrian Army and militants broke out with a renewed vigor.

In the western and eastern regions of al-Nashwa, the Syrian Army advanced on positions of armed groups in an attempt to take control of the area east to al-Nashwa.

On the other side, infantry were fighting for the bus station in the center of al-Hasakah in order to restore control over the main road that runs through the city.

A source in the army told Sputnik that in the city center, armed forces were using only light artillery and in parts of al-Nashwa the infantry was getting help from tanks.

“Fighting in these areas began on Tuesday after a mortar attack on some areas of the city,” the source said.

According to him, the forces of the national militia and the army are fighting shoulder to shoulder against Daesh militants in areas around the central prison and the main power plant.

Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011, with government forces loyal to President Bashar Assad fighting a number of opposition factions and extremist groups.

On February 27, a US-Russia brokered ceasefire came into force in Syria. Terrorist groups such as Daesh, as well as al-Nusra Front are not part of the deal. Both groups are banned in Russia and a range of other countries.
