A Chinese court has sentenced lawyer and human rights activist Zhou Shifeng on charges of attempting to overthrow the government, local media reported Thursday.

BEIJING (Sputnik) — Zhou, whose Beijing-based Fengrui law firm was known for helping dissidents in their legal battles against the Chinese government, was given a 7-year prison sentence, China’s Xinhua news agency said.

The court also suspended Zhou’s political rights for five years. The activist reportedly pleaded guilty and will not appeal the judgment.

In July 2015, Chinese authorities launched a massive crackdown on dissent. Around 300 people, mostly rights activists and lawyers, were detained and questioned. The majority of them was later released.
