The Palestinian Islamic Resistance movement, Hamas, has denied that there is any future role for the former Middle East Quartet special envoy to the Middle East Tony Blair, particularly in regards to prisoner swaps.

An anonymous spokesman official is quoted as saying: "We have completely closed this file."

On why the resistance has decided to rule out any future mediation with UK's ex PM, the spokesman said that "[Tony Blair] was clearly taking the side of the Israeli occupation at the expense of the Palestinian resistance and its conditions."

The Middle East Quartet is a group of nations and supranational entities consisting of Russia, United Nations, United States, and the European Union, which was established in 2002 with the aim of mediating the so-called 'peace process' between Israel and Palestine.

Blair took the position in 2007 as Special Envoy to the quartet a few days after he resigned as UK Prime Minister. He was tasked with helping to develop the Palestinian economy and improve governance in the occupied Palestinian Territories.

However, Blair's critics questioned his suitability for the role, focusing in particular on his role in the cataclysmic invasion of Iraq in 2003, and what many saw as a leaning toward the Israelis over the Palestinians.

Palestinian writer Jafar Ramini told Sputnik:

"From the beginning choosing Tony Blair as a negotiator between the Israelis and the Palestinians was an acrimonious move. The man is warmonger and from the moment he started he's been playing the Israeli card, and taking their side."

Ramini elaborated that tony Blair "has not been effective in his role, all he did was help Israel to consolidate its grip on Gaza, to steal the gas off the coasts of Gaza to steal the fish from the waters of Gaza, to create an open for two million people."

"None of the Western leaders will entertain anything for the benefit of the Palestinians. They all help to ensure the supremacy of Israel."

Ramini's words echo the sentiment that Tony Blair's key role as special envoy was to defang the Palestinian resistance, while helping to manage, rather than end, the nearly decades long besiegement of Gaza.

However, his comments run counter to those of the Quartet itself, who when commenting on Blair's work have highlighted his "unwavering commitment to the cause of Israeli-Palestinian peace and made lasting contributions to the effort to promote economic growth and improve daily life in the West Bank and Gaza".

As a direct results of the Israeli blockade, according to the United Nations, in 2015 youth unemployment in Gaza was at 60%, and 80% of Gazan families rely on food handouts by the international agencies, without which they would, according to human rights organisations, literally starve.

While Hamas may have rejected the idea of accepting Tony Blair as future broker, it is likely that he will continue to play a role in advising the Israeli government.
