Iranian election supervisory body has approved the holding of 12th presidential elections on May 19, 2017, local media reported Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Iran's Guardian Council of the Constitution, the election supervisory body, has approved the decision to hold the country's 12th presidential elections on May 19, 2017, local media reported Wednesday.

According to the Mehr news agency, Guardian Council members did not make a decision on the dates for city council elections, however, according to a parliament bill, presidential and city council elections should be held simultaneously.

The last presidential elections were held in Iran on June 14, 2013. The Guardian Council then screened 680 registered candidates, approving eight to run in the election, with Hassan Rouhani winning in a landslide victory.
