ANKARA (Sputnik) — Late on Friday, Turkish authorities said that an attempted coup took place in the country. The coup was suppressed several hours later. Over 260 people were killed and hundreds were injured during the events, while some 6,000 people have already been detained.
"We will not leave our squares empty, we will not leave them. This is not an operation which lasts 12 hours," Erdogan said as quoted by NTV broadcaster.
The rally, which continued early on Sunday, was centered on the Istanbul Taksim square with thousands present chanting pro-governmental slogans and singing songs devoted to Erdogan.
Activists on vehicles, including cars and motorcycles, took part in the rally, flying Turkish flags and beeping horns.
Police said there were no incidents reported.
