The Russian Embassy sent a request to the Turkish authorities to ensure the safety of Russian citizens and Russian institutions in Turkey amid the coup attempt in the country, the press attache of the embassy said on Saturday.

ANKARA (Sputnik) — ​​Earlier on Saturday, the Turkish government came under siege by a faction of military forces who sought to end President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's rule using helicopters and tanks in the attempt.

"The embassy is checking the information on possible incidents with Russian citizens during the recent events in Turkey, we keep in touch with other Russian missions. We asked the Turkish authorities to take all necessary measures to ensure the safety of Russian citizens and institutions in the Republic of Turkey,"  Igor Mityakov told RIA Novosti.

He added that at the moment the embassy received no information about Russian citizens injured during the events in Turkey.
