Turkey’s chief of military staff Hulusi Akar has been taken to a safe location after being held hostage by supporters of the attempted military coup, CNN Turk TV reports.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Earlier, NTV reported citing a spokesperson of the national intelligence agency that Akar had been released by organizers of the military coup attempt.

Turkish Defense Minister Fikri Isik told NTV that the chief of staff had been taken hostage by military coup attempt participants.

Earlier on Saturday, the Turkish government came under siege by a faction of military forces who sought to end the rule of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan citing the leader's drift away from the country's long-held secularist values.

At least 60 people were killed amid the military coup attempt in Turkey, 42 of them died in Ankara. The victims include civilians and military servicemen, according to the Ankara prosecutor’s office.
